Meshless Computational Methods Meshless Computational Methods Meshless Computational Methods Although a number of computational approaches exist for solving engineering problems, the meshless modeling method is gaining traction among scientists and engineers. Other techniques such as finite difference/volume, finite element, and boundary element have been typically used to tackle complex engineering problems that often require extensive meshing; however, meshless methods can be just as accurate and are faster, simpler, and require far less data storage. It hasn't been too long ago that the idea of numerically solving complex partial differential equations (PDEs) without the need of a mesh was essentially deemed impossible, except where analytical methods could be used on simplified problems, says Darrell W. Pepper, professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Nevada Center for Advanced Computational Methods at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. However, over the past decade, meshless methodsbeing able to solve PDEs using node points within a problem domain without the need for nodal connectivitybegan to show up in the area of solid mechanics. These quickly grew into applications involving heat transfer and more recently into fluid dynamics and related transport areas. Ease of Use Meshless methods are uniquely simple, yet provide solution accuracies for certain classes of equations that rival those of finite elements and boundary elements, without requiring the need for mesh connectivity. Meshless also requires no domain or surface discretization or numerical integration. Image: Ncacm.unlv.edu The popularity of the meshless approach results from the ease with which a problem geometry can be established, without the burden of constructing complex grids, and the simplistic solution technique utilizing basic geometric concepts, such as radial basis functions, says Pepper. Pepper recounts a project where he and several colleagues spent nearly six months creating an acceptable mesh to solve thermal-hydraulic flow within a nuclear reactor that contained 600 assembliesover 150 million nodes were required to complete the project. Such large problems generally result in extremely demanding computational resources, typically requiring supercomputers. Alternatively, a meshless method is not restricted to dimensional limitations, Pepper continues. An infinite domain can be modeled (depending on the number of nodes) and run on a PC. The accuracy achieved, with even a limited number of nodes in a meshless method, compares closely to solutions obtained using massively refined grids. Having the versatility of the ubiquitous finite element method and its use of unstructured meshes (elements), the meshless method is becoming a quick, accurate, and viable alternative to these more popular, conventional numerical approaches. Advantages Abound Meshless methods include kernel methods, moving least square method, partition of unity methods, and radial basis functions. Meshless methods utilizing RBFs create mesh-free algorithms that are significantly simpler to employ than more standard approaches. Other advantages of meshless methods include: Significantly reduced costs compared to current, expensive commercial codes for doing complex analysis Computer platform independenceapps will eventually be written that will enable the method to run on a table or even smart phone Problem class flexibilityalmost any problem that can be described with a set of PDEs can be solved using the method Familiarity of the method and use within undergraduate curriculum and advanced extrapolation to graduate level worksimple models have been written using MATLAB, MAPLE, MATHEMATICA, and FORTRAN, including C$ and JAVA Efforts are now underway to develop localized meshless techniques that are exceptionally fast, easy to employ, and can be used in multiphysics applications. Recent work has included modeling indoor air pollution, including terrorist threats, subsequently resulting in a real-time response system that can automatically activate preventive measures, says Pepper. Another application is in bioengineering, especially in modeling aortic blood flow, distribution of air and particulates within the lungs, effects of heat transfer, and structural prosthetics. We’re going to cover how to: talk with your family and friends about being laid off, cut expenses, file for unemployment, and give yourself a chance to recuperate from the loss. But first, let’s start right there: job loss. A layoff is also known as a job loss because it’s exactly that- a loss. Your relationships with coworkers, managers, and even your friends and family feel like they change overnight when you’re let go from a job. In many cases, when the layoff is abrupt and immediate, there’s not even time to think about your situation before you’re out of work. In order to cope with the letdown of a layoff, you first have to acknowledge the loss and move through it. Until you deal with some key issues, you can’t truly begin to recover, both as a person and a professional. And what we most need after we’ve suffered a job loss is that feeling of recovery. So let’s get started. 4 Steps to Cope with the Letdown of a Layoff 1. Talking to Friends and Family That old adage of honesty as the best policy is true in this situation for sure. If you have a spouse and/or children, talk with them honestly about what’s happened. For you and for them, this openness and honesty will make all the changes to come much more manageable. For example, your daily routine will be changing, so talk to your kids in an age-appropriate way about needing to find a new job and what that means for your schedule and theirs. It’s completely normal to feel embarrassed or ashamed after being laid off. And you might try to put on a brave face, or distance yourself from your closest family and friends, but don’t. They can act as a support network to keep you positive as you work to find a new job. By being open and honest up front, you’ll set the stage for a positive job search with the support you’ll need. 2. Filing for Unemployment Filing for unemployment can take a good amount of time, so start as soon as possible. Depending on the state where you live, there are multiple ways to file for unemployment: by visiting your state’s unemployment website over the phone by mail 3. Cutting Expenses As for cutting any expenses that aren’t totally necessary to your daily living, it’s time to estimate how long your job search might take, so you’ll know how much time you might be without a steady paycheck. This TIME article goes to great lengths to figure out the average length of a job search, which they pin at 43 days, but this estimate is based on how long it takes employers to fill a job,  which has exactly zero to do with how long it might take an individual to find a job. The length of your job search will vary depending on your industry, location, and career level. But, as career expert Liz Ryan points out, you have a lot more control over the length of your job search than you think. Writing about the average length of a job search, Ryan says, “You have to take control of your career if you want to start working. You cant sit back and say ‘Well, Ive heard this job search could take months, so Im chilling. Its going to take forever anyway- so I send out a few resumes each week.’ Thats passive. Wheres the altitude in that? A job hunt is not like taking a number at the deli and waiting for your number to be called! You have to be out in the marketplace meeting people all the time and researching specific employers and hiring managers.” One way to determine the potential length of your own job search is to ask people in your network who’ve recently changed jobs how long the entire process took them. This also helps open up conversations about your new status as a job seeker, and puts you in their minds as someone to remember if they hear of any openings. 4. Taking Time to Recuperate As mentioned  before, losing a job is truly a loss, so give yourself time to move through feelings like grief, frustration, disorientation, and worry. If your former employer gives you access to counselors and career coaches, use them! Talking with a trained unemployment counselor can have a really positive impact on all of the negative feelings you’re experiencing, and they can point you to more helpful resources. Even the simplest experiments have major potential for trouble if done wrong. The word LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser is a device that emits a concentrated beam of photons, which are the basic units of electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic radiation is another word for light. A laser controls the way energized atoms release photons and work by focusing the light energy into a narrow beam; mirrors are used inside the laser device to make the photons bounce off each other and charge up. Light particles from a regular or incandescent bulb are not concentrated and they scatter out in all directions. Although light energy will behave in the same way whether it comes from a light bulb or a laser, the concentration of light in the beam of the laser will allow you to see how light waves work. One of the principles you will observe is the Law of Reflection, which states that when an object bounces off a flat surface, the angle at which it hits a flat surface will be equal to the angle at which it bounces away. This angle changes when the surface is not perfectly flat. When a light wave reaches a boundary, like the wall of a container or a piece of glass, it will bend. This is called refraction. When a beam exits on the other side of the boundary (We call this the pass-through beam), the angle will be different depending on the characteristics of the boundary, such as its thickness, smoothness and transparency. Before we start experimenting, youll need eye protection that will shade your eyes, so use large-frame sunglasses or tinted UV ski goggles. Even with that protection, though, dont shine a laser beam into your eyes or the eyes of anyone else. Another note: Use keychain-type lasers from a toy or discount store. Green lasers sold in astronomy stores are too dangerous for the eyes. Here are a few experiments you can try. Once you have set up the experiment, darken the room as much as possible. Plastic Bottle Beam. Fill a clean plastic water or soda bottle with water and add a sprinkle of cornstarch. Turn down the lights and turn on your laser, aiming the beam through the bottle. Do you see the beam in the bottle? Can you find the reflection beam and the pass-through beam? Light Bulb Glow. In the dark, aim your laser at a frosted incandescent light bulb. The bulb will glow and have several internal reflections! Reuse Old CDs. Shine your beam over the surface of an old CD or DVD. You should see between five and 13 reflections off the surface, depending on where you shine the laser, how many scratches there are on the surface and how good your seeing conditions are. Different Glassware Types. Pass the laser beam through objects such as wine glasses or clear glass vases. How does the beam pass through differently between plastic and glass, smooth and multifaceted surfaces? Can you find the pass-through beam as well as a reflected beam? Characteristics of Lenses. If you have an old pair of eyeglasses, pop out the lenses. Direct the beam through one lens. Try it at several places on the lens and see how light passes through parts that are thicker, thinner and angled. Take the second lens and line it up a few inches away from the first to see how the light wave bends.

The History of Modern Policing The History of Modern Policing During the early history of policing, individual citizens were largely responsible for maintaining law and order among themselves. Those who served as constables and justices of the peace did so voluntarily and were not typically paid for their services. Shire reeves, or sheriffs, were employed full-time to oversee law enforcement activities within their shires in England and their counties in the colonies. Through the centuries, those practices played a significant role in the history of policing around the world. The loosely-based system of social control worked quite well for centuries, particularly in more rural and less populated regions. However, the late 1700s and early 1800s saw a population explosion in major cities in the United States and England. Riots and civil unrest were common, and it became increasingly clear that there was a need for a more permanent and professional form of law enforcement that would carry the official authority of the government. The Beginning of Modern Policing Philosophers, sociologists and those in the newly evolving field of criminology, including legal philosopher Jeremy Bentham and his acolytes, began to call for a centralized police force to protect the citizenry and to maintain order. Perhaps the most powerful advocate for a professional police force was Sir Robert Peel, a Minister of Parliament who served as Home Secretary for the United Kingdom in the 1820s. In 1829, Peel established the Metropolitan Police Services in London. With the founding of Londons police force, Peel became widely regarded by criminologists and historians alike as the father of modern policing. British police officers are still known affectionately as Bobbies in honor of his first name, Robert. Early Public Opposition to the Police Force The concept of a centralized, professional police force was a tough sell initially  and was met with a tremendous amount of resistance. The public feared that a police force would essentially behave as another arm of the military. As a result, there was an understandable reluctance to agree to be controlled by what many assumed would be an occupying force. To overcome this opposition, Peel is known for laying the framework for what a police force should be comprised of and how a good police officer should conduct himself. While there is debate as to whether he ever clearly enumerated his ideas in any sort of list format, it is generally agreed that he created what are to this day considered to be the primary principles of policing. Principles of Policing: The Why and How The Peelian Principles, as they are often called, insisting that: The purpose of the police force is to prevent crime and maintain order.Police depend on the approval and trust of the public to effectively do their jobs.The ultimate goal of policing is to achieve voluntary compliance with the law in the community.Police must be unwavering in their duties and adherence to the law, maintaining impartiality and avoiding the temptation to be swayed by public opinion.The use of force and physical control is to be used as a last resort, only when other forms of persuasion have failed. Police officers must remember that they, too, are members of the public and that their purpose is to serve and protect the public.The true measure of the effectiveness of any police force is not the number of arrests or police actions taken, but the absence of criminal conduct and violations of the law. Gaining Public Support for Police Peels efforts were very effective in assuaging public fears and concerns. In addition to the principles of policing, Peel and his supporters took other measures to ensure that there was a clear distinction between professional police officers and the military. Police wore blue uniforms in contrast to the bright red of the Royal armed forces. They were forbidden to carry guns, and at all times the importance of maintaining the public trust was impressed upon members of the force. Police Evolution in the United States This concept of the modern police force soon found its way to the United States, though it was not implemented in exactly the same manner as it was in London. Over the next century and beyond, the concept of policing evolved in the U.S. The principles and ideas of Sir. Robert Peel and his adherents were expounded on by law enforcement professionals around the globe, with the input of officers and criminologists alike. Some people are just flat out angry about cupcakes (“Do you really make these from scratch? This has way too much icing on it. You want me to pay how much for that?!”). At times, all I wanted to do was hide behind the glass case and wave my little white apron in defeat.But I stuck out my time there, and I’m glad I did- because now I feel I’ve learned the best customer service lessons I could have asked for. Here are some of the biggest ones I picked up on the job.Treat Every Customer As If You’re There Just for HerMy first day on the job, my customer service training consisted of this: “Have you ever been to a Tiffany†™s?” asked my boss. I nodded. “Whenever a customer walks in here, you treat them like they just walked into Tiffany’s.” What she meant was to give every customer your devoted attention. Think about it: when you walk into a jewelry store, the salesperson is at your side, ready to help in every way they can. They get you things, they give you opinions, and they don’t go onto the next customer until they’ve given you your time.While we weren’t selling overpriced rocks, we were selling overpriced baked goods, so our customers deserved the same level of attention. Even when we had lines out the door, we all had to do our best to make each customer feel special. We would patiently help them choose flavors, ask about their days (and actually listen to the answer), throw in a free cupcake or fun topper for the kids every once in a while. And all along, we would act like, “of course, I’m doing this just for you!”Even if your product is great, a bad experience with your bu siness will leave a sour taste in a customer’s mouth, and a good experience will make it even sweeter. So, even if you are rushed, never make your customers feel like you’re rushing them.
